Failed to download UI

Failed to download UI

Postby Suezanne » Fri Dec 18, 2009 9:59 am

I've installed the latest version, the one release around 12-17-09.

The installation appeared to proceed properly.

Upon launching the program I get a "Failed to download UI" message and that's it.

This is on a machine that has run Blue Mars reasonably properly before.

Windows XP, SP3, 1 gig ram, ATI x800 video card, 256 megs of video ram.

You may try this:
Path: Control Panel>User Accounts
Click on your user account name; at the bottom there’s an option “Turn user account control on or off”; uncheck the box that says: “UAC – User Account Control”. It worked for me but my error message was different so I’m not sure ... I also disabled my firewall and spyware security.
P.S.
I hate the cones and this awful click to walk too - it's is plain wrong.

Thanks for the response.

I found the problem after some searching of these forums.

I have chronic problems with YouTube videos using the Firefox web browser, causing me to uninstall and reinstall Flash with an annoying frequency.

When you install Flash, you install it for either Internet Explorer or Firefox separately.

However when you uninstall Flash player, you uninstall it for both browsers.

I don't use Internet Explorer much, and wasn't aware that the last time I went through the uninstall and reinstall Flash player process I had failed to reinstall it for Internet Explorer.

It was a considerable pain getting Flash player to install in Internet Explorer 8. I wish like heck I had not installed IE 8 and had stuck with IE7. I'd switch back, but in order to do that I'd have to uninstall XP SP3. The only reason I switched is that MS keeps bugging you about the need to upgrade. I thought I was taking the path of least effort. I was wrong.

I find it hard to believe that MS released a program that works as poorly as IE8 does. It can't be counted on to display it's menu correctly. Sheesh.

It's not such a great idea for Blue Mars to depend on windows users needing to use the Internet Explorer version of Flash player. I'm not sure of the details, but in Europe there's something going on about Windows users being presented a menu of choices of browser. There may be a good number of people who won't use Internet Explorer as a result of that.

It took an hour and a half or more to get Flash player to install under Internet Explorer 8. I suppose I may have to break down and uninstall SP3 and get rid of IE8.

At any rate, once I had Flash player for IE installed, Blue Mars worked.

I'm gonna bump this just to provide a bit of help for those who are searching for "Failure to Download UI.

Someone has said elsewhere that this message is a bit obscure. As far as I can tell the reason this message appears is that
a) The start-up User Interface (which is Flash 10 based) can't run because Flash is not installed for Internet Explorer
b) The UI can't start because it can't connect to the Blue Mars servers (internet connection)

I had this problem because I am a Firefox user and have just got a new computer. Naturally enough my Internet explorer only had Flash player 7. One install of Flash 10 into Internet explorere and the login page sprang into life

I've had the same UI problem for over a month now. Latest version of Flash on all browsers (playerversion.com checked IEx64 deferred to IEx32, set IE to accept all ActiveX crap etc. on low security), latest NVIDIA drivers, DSL speedcheck at over 1000kbps... Uninstalled. Deleted everything. Reinstalled.

Any other suggestions?

Same problem on several systems. Windows 7 x64 Ultimate:
1) GeForce GTS 250, eVGA P55 micro mobo, 4 GB RAM, Intel i7-860
2) GeForce GTX 450, eVGA P55 mobo, 8 GB RAM, Intel i7-920

Blue Mars Support has been unable to solve the problem. I opened the ticket on June 9 (my RL birthday). My birthday wish was that they'd fix this UI bug, which folks have been experiencing since 2009, apparently. Blue Mars Support has been relatively responsive, though (sorry to say!) absolutely useless!

It's sad that I have to manually send in error logs, that there's no automated error report system. I was able to access Blue Mars back in its private beta days -- way back on my Intel Core 2 systems on Vista x64. Would be sad if you have to actually downgrade to an older system to use this betaware!

In any case, I'm still hoping for a fix -- anyone got another solution to "Failed to download UI"?

NVIDIA P55 Micro (LGA1356)
